Every search for “how much to publish a book in Nepal” wants a number. A number pulled from the air would be easy to put here, and it would be a lie the moment your page count, paper or editorial needs differed from the last book. SPH does not publish a menu of packages. We read the work, then we write a proposal.
This page is the honest substitute: what moves the figure, what is usually excluded, and what you should distrust in anyone else’s quote.
What moves the number
- Extent — how many pages, after design, not after Word’s estimate.
- Colour — a text novel in black ink is a different object from an illustrated book.
- Paper and binding — choice is not decoration; it is the object in the hand.
- Print run — the unit cost falls as the run rises, and unsold copies are still paid for.
- Language and script — Nepali, English, bilingual interiors, and Devanagari typesetting are not the same job.
- Editorial depth — a light copy-edit is not a structural rebuild, and neither is writing the book.
- Writing support — developing a manuscript from notes is a different engagement from editing a finished draft.
- Time — a dedicated house that stays with you costs more than a file dropped on a printer.
- The public life of the book — a campaign is not a Facebook post on publication day.
What a quote should separate
A serious proposal names the work in lines a grown person can read: editorial, design, pre-press, print, ISBN as publisher of record, distribution, and campaign. If “publishing package” is a single lump, you cannot tell whether you are buying judgement or only sheets. Ask for the split. If they will not split it, they are hiding the print quote inside a brand.
What is usually not in a print quote
- The months of thinking and rewriting.
- A campaign that still exists after the launch photograph.
- Distribution that is more than a stack left at one counter.
- Corrections after you change your mind in proof.
- A second edition.
Timeline, which is also money
A finished, clean manuscript of modest extent can move through production on a calendar measured in months. A book that must be researched, written, translated or illustrated cannot. Anyone who quotes one timeline for every book is selling anxiety relief, not a plan. After we have read your application we can attach dates to stages. Until then, distrust the round number.
Questions
Why won’t you put a starting price on this page?
Because a starting price becomes the price people remember, and then every real proposal looks like a bait-and-switch. The drivers above are the truth we can stand behind. The rupee figure belongs in a document written for your book.
Is author-funded publishing “vanity publishing”?
The insult is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Paying for production is common for first books in Nepal. The question that matters is whether a publisher is actually publishing — editing, bibliographic record, distribution, public life — or only printing your file. SPH does the former, for few clients, on purpose.
Do you take a royalty instead of a fee?
House-funded books, when they happen, live on a different commercial conversation. Most of the work we take on is a dedicated engagement with a clear proposal. We will not pretend every title is an advance-and-royalty deal.
How do I get a number?
Apply through Start a book. That is how a proposal starts. sammanpublishinghouse@gmail.com is for questions the form cannot hold, not for “send rate card”.
The application is how a real figure is born.
